Protect your columns from contamination with filters and guard columns

Particulate and chemical contaminants entering or arising in the HPLC system can adversely affect column performance. The effects of column contamination may appear as high back-pressure, reduced column life, peak broadening, or changes in retention and selectivity. Contaminants in an HPLC system are typically traceable to either of two sources:

The solvents and solvent delivery system

Problem: Fine particulate matter from abrasion of pumping system and mixer parts can reach the column causing high column back-pressure. Routine filtration of solvents during preparation and at the point of withdrawal from reservoirs is a good practice. However, it does not protect against particulates generated in the solvent delivery system.

Solution: Place an in-line eluent filter between the solvent delivery system and the sample injector. Vydac offers an in-line eluent filter (Catalog No. EF-4) consisting of a high-surface-area 2µ metal element in a holder that can be connected to any HPLC system. The eluent filter removes particulate contaminants from the solvent.

Sample impurities

Problem: Insoluble material in the sample or sample components which are strongly retained on the column matrix can reduce column lifetime by causing high column back-pressure or changing column selectivity.

Solution: Vydac offers high-performance guard columns designed to protect your column from insoluble or strongly retained sample components. To remove sample components which may damage the column, install a Vydac High-Performance Guard Column between the sample injector and the column.




Vydac High-Performance Guard Columns

Vydac offers a High-Performance Guard Column system consisting of a reusable holder and replaceable cartridge containing the same separation material used in the column. Cartridges are replaced as needed and the holder can be used indefinitely. The Vydac High-Performance Guard Holder with cartridge is placed between the sample injector and the column. High performance guard columns retain and, in some cases, enhance column performance. High-Performance Guard Columns are available for Vydac columns from 1.0 mm to 22 mm diameter.

For use with Microbore (1.0 mm), Narrow-Bore (2.1 mm), Analytical (4.6 mm) or Semipreparative (10 mm) Columns:

High-Performance Guard Kits and Cartridges

Each guard kit consists of a cartridge holder and one cartridge.

Replacement guard cartridges are shipped two per box for microbore (1.0 mm ID), narrow-bore (2.1 mm ID) and analytical (4.6 mm ID) cartridges, one per box for semi-preparative (10 mm ID) cartridges.
